Outdoor location shoots are a great way to capture some updated portraits of yourself and your family. They are often a way of getting some really relaxed, natural images, but with all the elements of a professional portrait session.
It can be difficult to decide how to dress you and your family for your shoot, so I’ve created a bit of a guide to help. Choosing the right colours can be a great start, as well as selecting outfits that you’re all comfortable in. It’s important to remember though that this is just a guide – the most important thing is that you and your children feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
What will happen at my session?
We’ll choose a location together prior to the session, ideally somewhere where we can get a good variety of images. There are lots of beautiful locations to choose from for a photography session in the South West, so we can choose somewhere that works for you and your family.
At the session, we’ll spend up to an hour shooting in different spots around the location, so you have a good variety of images to choose from in your gallery. We’ll aim to get a mix of natural and slightly more posed images, all captured in a relaxed way.

Keep it simple!
I’d suggest for all shoots to try and avoid clothes with a lot of branding on if you can. This helps keep the look fresh and timeless. You are the focus; so keeping everything simple so is a good idea.
In terms of patterns, it’s best to stick to block colours for the majority of clothing, although if you’re coming with your family, it’s often nice to add a subtle pattern or two that matches the rest of your outfits.
Colour pallet
It’s a good idea to try and choose clothes for everyone that work well together – for spring and summer, denims, light neutral colours, kaki greens, blues, greys, whites and pastels can work well.

Layering
Unless it is super hot outside, summer weather can be really changeable, so it’s often a good idea to bring along a light layer or two just in case the temperature changes – it’s really important to feel comfortable. I’d suggest bringing along a lightweight cardigan, sweater or long sleeved top just in case.
