Autumn is such an amazing time of year for family photography – lots of gorgeous colours and hopefully crisp, sunny days!
It can be tricky to decide how to dress your family for your shoot, so I’ve created a bit of a guide to help. Choosing the right colours can be a great start, as well as selecting outfits that you’re all comfortable in.
Colour pallet
It’s often a good idea to choose clothes for everyone that work well together – for autumn, burgundies, mustard yellows, navy blues, dark denims, browns and greys work nicely. It’s often a good idea to pick a few of these colours and mix and match for variety, maybe adding in a few different textures and tones in there too.

Keep it simple!
I’d suggest for all shoots to try and avoid clothes with a lot of branding on if you can. This helps keep the look fresh and timeless. You are the focus, so keeping everything simple so is a good idea.
In terms of patterns, it’s best to stick to block colours for the majority of clothing, although dressing one or two of your family in a checked shirt or a stripy scarf can work well for variety.
Here’s some inspiration from H&M Kids:

Layering
As we are yet to see the really cold weather in autumn, I’d suggest going for layers rather than thick winter coats. Cosy jumpers and cardigans are often a bit more flattering than chunky coats too, especially on adults and older children. Hats and scarves work well too, as long as they’re not so big they hide your face!

Most importantly, relax and have fun!
At the end of the day the shoot is about you and your family, so while clothes are worth thinking about, the most important thing is to relax and enjoy your experience.
